THE FORTRESS HOUSES

One of the traditional constructions in the Pyrenees are the Fortress Houses, of which the municipality maintains some excellent examples. These are buildings made in the 16th and 17th centuries in a period of great insecurity and wars. Their objectives were of lodgings and defence, all of them having square or round- shaped towers. In Escanilla “Casa Mora” must be highlighted, in Abizanda “Casa Carlos” (it used to be called “Maza de Lizana”) and “Casa Maza”, and in Ligüerre de Cinca “El Palacio”. The fortress houses as well as the towers of Abizanda and Escanilla have been declared B.I.C. (Asset of Cultural Interest).
